No regrets - but a few resolutions

‘If I had my life over’“There are too many serious people trying to get everybody else to be too darned serious.”

I love the sentiment in this poem by the author Paulo Coelho: you can’t unfry an egg but if I had to live my life over I would…

I’ll be thinking about what my own list would look like as the old year gives way to the new - but, fresh from laughing myself silly playing parlour games for Christmas,  taking myself less seriously, lightening up and having more fun, will definitely feature.

That and going barefoot earlier in the spring…

Once you’ve taken a look at Coelho’s thoughts I’d love to know what your list would look like.

BookCrossing goes Large

Sunday, December 12, 2010

One of the first activities in Have the best year of your life is my suggestion you leave a book that meant a great deal to you in a public place for someone else to discover and enjoy. It’s not a new idea: there’s been a ‘bookcrossing’ movement for years - though it’s yet to really take off in the UK, perhaps because passing books forward is not as easy as it sounds.

This blogpost records how trying to follow my own advice and share a book that changed my life with others actually ended up costing me a tenner, as well as my favourite book.

Anyway, that was then….I’ve just come across plans for the first ever World Book Night, as part of which 20,000 people will get the chance to give away 48 copies of their favourite book, to friends, and probably to strangers too unless they are blessed with more mates than most of us. You can read about this attempt to give away one million books in a single night here - and have until January 4 2011 to apply to be one of the 20,000.

It’s a great idea. But you have been warned!
